What are Martial Arts?

Martial Arts are recorded systems and traditions in fighting methods, which are practiced for several reasons; self defense, millitary- and law enforcing applications, mental and spiritual growth, as well for entertainment and preservation of cultural heritage.

Although the term martial arts is associated with the East-Asian fighting arts, it’s origin lies in European fighting methods. The term is a derivative from Latin and means ‘Art of Mars’; the Roman god of war. The term was used mainly for duelling sports such as fencing, later the Asian Martial Arts took over the term and started using it as a collective name for all Korean, Japanese and Chinese fighting methods.
